There are dozens of online guitar courses and on line guitar tutorials promising to teach you guitar or make you a better player and it can be quite confusing finding the course that suits you.

There are blues guitar courses, jazz guitar courses, metal guitar courses, guitar technique courses, you name it there is an on line guitar course aimed at a specific area of the instrument.

As a broad rule of thumb I would suggest that a comprehensive guitar tutorial covering all aspects of the instrument is the best way to learn guitar online. Sure if you are already proficient at guitar and you want to learn a particular style or technique there are e-products available that will assist you, but if you want a thorough grounding and a complete guide you need to find a structured program that will deliver quality reliable lessons at an affordable price.

It is possible to pick things up on various guitar sites like this one, or YouTube but to really learn in a structured planned way you need a quality program or a flesh and blood teacher.

I m a guitar teacher and I find that these days I am recommending some on line reference material to assist my students – simply because the learning material is there all the time. One on one lessons are great but they are only half an hour long whereas an on line tutorial can be referenced over and over again.

I therefore regard on line guitar tutorials as an essential part of teaching and learning guitar today.

When looking for a quality on line guitar program I would suggest that you look for some key elements to assist you to get the most out of your time and money.

Structure does the course progress logically from basic fundamental techniques to intermediate and then advanced lessons.

Are there video demonstrations? And are the videos produced well, with multiple camera angles and clear easy to follow demonstrations. A video of somebody showing how well he can play arpeggios is worthless, whereas a video of somebody demonstrating how to play arpeggios is well worth watching.

Are there back up resources – tablature, forums an easy way to contact people for clarification

Are there different tutors for different styles?- you don’t get a carpenter to fix your leaking tap – you shouldn’t get a jazz player to teach you ACDC licks.

Is there a money back guarantee. All reputable online programs have this.

What do others say about the course? Its really hard to get honest testimonials or reviews – suffice to say if the course has over 10000 members or customers they are doing something right.

There are a number of good quality guitar programs that have all these elements.

I have chosen three that I believe give good quality structured guitar tutorials at reasonable prices.

Recommended Online Guitar Tutorial Number 1

JamPlay.

I’ve only recently discovered Jamplay and I’m super impressed with the quality of lesson, the depth of back up material and the range and scope of material provided.

Jamplay covers 14 different styles of guitar playing including blues guitar, Fingerstyle, metal,Hawaiian slack key, bluegrass, rock, Celtic, classical, country, jazz, Flamenco, Folk, R&B and Soul and its lessons are structured from beginner to advanced.
These guys know what they’re doing and have a range of experienced professional tutors who deliver comprehensive lessons via video.

Membership costs less than $20 per month
Rating 9/10

Recommended Online Guitar Tutorial Number 2

Guitar Tricks

Very similar to Jam Play Guitar Tricks has a range of styles and tutorials available. Lesson delivery is via video with appropriate back up material.
Guitar tricks have over 3000 guitar video lessons available and they have won numerous awards for their online tutorials.

Ultimately , choosing between Guitar Tricks and Jamplay is a toss of a coin – I lean slightly towards JamPlay and I suspect that is simply because some of the specific lessons are more relevant too me. Either way both of these are excellent long term guitar learning resources.

Rating 9/10

Membership costs less than $20 per month

On Line Guitar Tutorial Number 3

Jamorama

Jamorama is a collection of downloadable eBooks, Video and Audio files that are accessible after a one off fee payment.

This site is aimed at the novice player and gives valuable downloadable content. Support is readily available via email.

What Jamorama does well is structure its lessons in an organized format for the beginner to progress reasonably quickly. I do not see Jamorama as a match for the other two sites, however, its one time price offers real value for an aspiring beginner to intermediate level guitar player

Priced at a one time payment of $49.95, Jamorama delivers good value

Rating7.5/10

Aqualung is one of those songs that I’ll never forget the first time I heard it.
That booming sinister riff and sneering demented vocals punctuated by an acoustic counter point that almost evokes sympathy for the subject, Aqualung was a masterpiece of progressive rock that even now stands as a a true classic of its time.

Jethro Tull never played the celebrity game and its key players Ian Anderson and Martin Barre (lead guitar) are not given the credit for the vast body of quality work that they produced over four decades.

I discovered this complete lesson on how to play Aqualung at Jamplay.
You’ll need to be able to play Pentatonic scales and use a Capo for the acoustic bit.

This is one song that Rock players should learn – Barre’s solo is by no means pyrotechnic, but is very tasteful – something a lot of flash guitar players could do well to consider and the song construction is masterful.

Jamplay really impress me – they’re lessons are very informative.

International guitar teacher and Rhapsody of Fire guitarist, Tom Hess, has created an interesting innovative resource designed to help guitar players create their own guitar solos.

Hess ha snailed the number one problem that most guitar players face

“It is common for guitar players to struggle with creative lead guitar playing due to a basic misunderstanding of various musical concepts. Fact is, guitar players like to show-off their guitar technique skills and look for any opportunity to do this in their solos. There is nothing wrong with this, however, the guitarist ends up focusing too much on technique and not enough on getting everything out of each note they play.”

Hess provides an alternate approach to soloing which makes sense and flies in the face of what I like to call guitar gymnastics. Everything comes from melody and Hess really focuses on teaching melody creation first.

This appears to be a very fine addition to the online guitar learning resource list.

Damn Shame they don’t have an affiliate program….

On line List Maker Spin has released a top 100 guitar Players List.

Spin make no bones about what their criteria for their list of guitar players and one could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps this list is deliberately put together to cause controversy.

The list also shows a complete lack of regard for (dare I say ignorance of) for some of the true greats – players like Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, Muddy Waters and B.B. King.

The list even features Skrillex at number 100 and he’s never touched a guitar in his life.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and SPIN are entitled to theirs but for my money this is the worst listing of Top 100 guitar players ever published.

For the record here is their top 10

Lee Ranaldo & Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)

Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine)

John Fahey

Kurt Cobain (Yes, really)

J Mascis

Prince

Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd (Television)

Johnny Ramone

Eddie Hazel (Funkadelic)

Jam Master Jay (Run-DMC)
(spare me)

The rest of this ill conceived list can be found here

Did Steve Hackett Invent Finger Tapping?

Finger tapping – the flash guitar technique popularized by Eddie Van Halen in 1978 was being used by Genesis lead guitar player Steve Hackett as early as 1971.

You can certainly hear some tapping going on in this song return of the giant

In an interview quoted at Ultimate Guitar, Hackett claims to have resorted to tapping to play a tiny piece from Toccata and Fugue by JS Bach.

“I was trying to play a tiny phrase from Toccata and Fugue by Bach, and I was wondering how to do it, because you couldn’t really do it across the strings. I figured that if I could do it on one string, then I’d be using the fretboard like a keyboard.”

Hackett bears no ill will towards Van Halen and acknowledges that Eddie has given him due credit. Interestingly, Hackett also states that everybody learns from everybody – its a refreshing viewpoint.

So did Steve Hackett invent tapping?

Probably not -although he may well be the first recorded guitar player to use the technique.

Ritchie Blackmore claims to have seen the technique used as early as 1968 by Harvey Mandel.

“Then Harvey Mandels tarts doing this stuff [mimes finger tapping]. What’s he doing? everybody was saying. Even the audience stopped dancing.” (Guitar World February 1991)

I suspect that other players would have stumbled upon the technique at some time or other trying to solve similar problems to what Steve Hackett encountered but the fact remains that without Van Halen’ s impact finger tapping would never have become the powerful and important technique that it has become today.

Finger tapping is almost an art in itself a great resource to learn finger tapping has recently been released on the online guitar market and is well worth the investment if you want to take your guitar playing to the next level.

The recent death of Men At Work flautist and songwriter Greg Ham was tragic in many ways. According to reports Ham was devastated by a court finding that Men At Work’s massive hit Down Under contained elements of the Australian Folk Song Kookaburra Sits On The Old Gum Tree specifically in relation to the flute riff within the song.

I didn’t know Greg – apparently he was a genuine committed musician who was highly regarded by his peers. But I do know the songs involved and for the life of me could never really see anything but a broad similarity. Most importantly while the flute riff was cool and sounded nicel I have never believed it was an essential item of teh song – Greg could have played any number of variations and the song would have essentially remained the same.

The court thought differently and the owners to the rights of Kookaburra were compensated accordingly.

That’s the law.

This is music and rock in particular is based around pentatonic and Blues scales. There are only so many notes.

It is inevitable that certain riffs will be chanced upon.

I often think that Wolfmother’s Joker and The Thief In the Night basic rhythm pattern is strikingly similar to Strange Kind Of Woman but the song is totally different so too the riff for Pink’s So What and teh Deep Purple classic Black Night.

Again I make the point this is rock music – everything is reworked , added to, improvised and played with passion power and feeling.

Similarities are inevitable.

Regrettably, so it seems are lawyers representing business interests as opposed to musicians.

One of my most treasured and referenced guitar instruction books is a short book from Bert Weedon – Rock and Blues guitar.
This little gem features some great blues and rock songs, all accurately tabbed and ranging from intermediate level to borderline difficult.

I often set one of these pieces for pupils who need to reinforce and strengthen their lead playing technique and knowledge.

Written back in the fifties the book has some killer guitar lines i it and there are heaps of recognizable licks used by some of the guitar greats.

Bert Weedon recently passed away at the ripe old age of 91 and while I can’t say he was a massive influence on my guitar playing, he certainly helped.

What surprised me was that Weedon did have a huge impact upon a whole generation of guitar players. Players like Eric Clapton, Brian May, Pete Townsend, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison all acknowledged Weedon’s influence according to the Kansas City Star.

Howard Kramer, curatorial director at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, said Weedon was “an institution.”

“He was to Great Britain what Mel Bay was to the United States,” Kramer told the Los Angeles Times this week, referring to the American guitar player who published instructional books for guitar and other instruments.

“Weedon’s method came out in the late ’50s when rock ‘n’ roll was breaking,” Kramer said. “There was a whole new wave of guitar-playing wannabes, and Bert Weedon was the way you learned.”

The guitar world owes a huge debt to Bert Weedon – he was a great teacher – long before this digital age.

Undoubtedly, Led Zeppelin have been one of the major influences on guitar rock in the past 50 years.

Zeppelin’s blend of blues, eastern melodies and surging power rock provide3d much of the blue print for what became Heavy metal.

Guitarist Jimmy Page was the driving force behind such classics as Stairway to heaven, Black Dog, The Immigrant Song and Whole Lotta Love and I remember getting a copy of Led Zeppelin complete – sheet music for every Zep song up until Physical Graffiti and being terribly disappointed to find that there was very little tablature provided and many of the good parts were written in Bass Clef.

Now, some thirty years on the esteemed Alfred Music Publishing Company has released the Led Zeppelin guitar method and this looks like an excellent way for somebody to learn guitar.

.”….Led Zeppelin Guitar Method teaches the essentials required to play guitar right away, applied to 26 time-honored songs from the iconic band, written in standard notation and TAB. Beginning with the vocal melodies, the method book quickly moves on to teach authentic-sounding guitar parts of such classics as “Stairway to Heaven,” ”Immigrant Song,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” “Over the Hills and Far Away,” “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” and many more. Zeppelin songs are used to illustrate and teach concepts such as popular chord forms, major and minor scales, power chords, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and much more. Carefully arranged to capture the essence of their original recordings, some song arrangements have been simplified to facilitate a faster, more enjoyable learning process.”

This is well worth a look for new guitar players and all Led Zeppelin fans

Is it possible to learn the notes on the guitar fretboard without spending hours of mindless practice repeating the same old scale patterns?

If you’ve landed on this page the chances are that you’re looking for a way to improve your guitar fretboard knowledge and your musicianship and guitar playing ability by being able to navigate your way around the fretboard quickly and easily.

You may be aware that the common way that most guitar teachers(including myself until recently) and guitar instruction manuals and courses advise is to master your scale patterns but the problem with this method is that it is mind numbingly boring and quite confusing. Anyone can learn finger patterns and scales if they practice – but what do they mean and how on earth are you meant to apply it and when?

What if there was an easier way -a way that encouraged you to understand what you were doing while simultaneously improving your mastery of the fretboard?

I found it – its an amazing software program called Guitar Notes Master and I know this will help 95% of guitar players out there and I can say that because after teaching and playing guitar for well over a quarter of a century, I know that one of the most common problems for guitar players of most levels is that the guitar fretboard, particularly past the fifth fret is a confusing and even intimidating area for most guitar players.

The guitar notes master can remove that confusion with the most comprehensive and easy understand piece of guitar tuition software that I’ve found.

Of course learning scales will work – it has for all of the greatest players on the planet but these guys didn’t just learn scales by rote – they learned the relationship between and the theory of each scale. Its hard work and to be honest its where most guitar players get lost.

The guitar notes master makes learning and understanding the guitar neck not only easier but fun.

The guitar notes master is interactive and will ask you question based upon what you’ve learned and ask you to apply it to the training modules.
This is designed to get your full understanding of everything from open strings, root shapes, note names, finding notes on the fretboard, diatonic scales, pentatonic scales, lead patterns, intervals, triads (arpeggios and chords) other chord types, modes and other scales.

The key here is understanding – not mindless learning.

A security guard who tried to pawn a guitar stolen from Tom Petty to a Hollywood pawn shop for $250 has been arrested by California Police.

Five guitars valued at $100,000 were stolen last week and have now all been recovered.

Petty, now aged 61, had taken to Facebook and Twitter offering a $7500 no questions asked reward for the return of the guitars.

In a recent update on Facebook, Petty states “The guitars have been found! ”I am extremely grateful to the Culver City Police Department for a job well done and touched by the outpouring of good wishes and concern from our fans and friends.”

The recovered guitars were Petty’s legendary vintage Rickenbacker 12 string electric, a 1967 Epiphone Sheridan, a 1965 Gibson SG TV Junior, a vintage Fender Broadcaster and a one of a kind, handmade, distinctive blue Dusenberg.

Obviously the security guard had no idea of the value of these guitars – I’d almost pay $250 to see them. J

Petty who appears to have been sincerely touched by the response of fans to the theft has just commenced a US tour.
